Eugene “Gene” Johnston Irvin, 70, of Concord, died Wednesday, May 10, 2017. A native of Concord, he was born February 3, 1947, to the late E. Johnston and Marguerite Presslar Irvin. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 30 years, Deana Rose Jinnette Irvin in 2001.
Gene graduated from Fishburne Military Academy before attending Mars Hill College, where he met Deana Rose at bible study. After graduation, he went to work for Cannon Mills as a computer programmer and where he worked until his retirement. Gene grew up in McKinnon Presbyterian Church, serving in many capacities and positions, before transferring to First Presbyterian Church of Concord. He was an avid fisherman who also enjoyed bowling and spending time with his family.
Gene is survived by his; daughters, Jinnette Clay and her husband Todd of Mt. Pleasant and Elizabeth Sutton Irvin of Concord; son, John Irvin of Hendersonville; granddaughter, Katherine Reilly Irvin; brothers, Howard Irvin and his wife Margaret of Concord and William “Bill” Irvin and his wife Ronnie Jean of Oakton, VA. He is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A memorial service will be held at 1:30 PM on Saturday, May 20, 2017 at First Presbyterian Church, 70 Union St. N with Rev. Peter Bynum officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. A private family inurnment will be held at Memorial Gardens.
