Edith Helms died May 30, 2016 at her home in Kannapolis. She was 97 years old and had lived a full and interesting life.
The funeral will be held at 2 pm Friday, June 3, 2016 in Wilkinson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Andy Langford and Rev. Susannah Pittman officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:30-2 pm prior to the service. Interment will be at Carolina Memorial Park.
Born March 26, 1919 in Western, NC, she always has a lifelong desire to work in the medical field, so when her children graduated from school and began their careers; Edith pursued that goal. She became a nursing assistant, then became a licensed practical nurse, then worked in ICU while attending school for respiratory therapist. Upon graduation, Edith came to Cabarrus Memorial Hospital (now CMC-NorthEast) to establish and develop the first inhalation therapy department. She was very successful, and upon retirement, the department consisted of more than a dozen employees. After retirement, she worked with oxygen supply, inhalation treatments, and bililights for babies. She was known to many patients and friends in the county.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Rowe J. and Annie Carver Dotson; her husbands, C.M. Curtis and Roland T. Helms; and five brothers and sisters. She is lovingly remembered by her sister Linda Crawford (Jack); daughter, Elaine Curtis; son, C.S. Curtis, Sr. (Charlotte); three grandchildren, Dawn, Charlies, and Chris; and six great-grandchildren, Chase, Hope, Caitlin, Christopher, Mary, and Xander.
The family is appreciative for all the assistance received during this extended illness, especially to her Hospice team of Janna Davis, Nancy James, Wendi Bradshaw and Laura Ponder who provided skilled care, support and concerned guidance.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Central United Methodist Church or to Palliative and Hospice Care of Cabarrus County or to the charity of your choice.
