Edgar Monroe Ketchie, Jr. passed away on Saturday, February 10, 2024 in Raleigh, N.C. Born on April 5, 1943, Ed was raised in Kannapolis. He graduated from A.L. Brown High School in 1961 and went on to graduate from Lenoir Rhyne University in 1965. After college, Ed earned a Master’s degree from New York University in 1968. He then served overseas in the United States Army, working in military intelligence during the Vietnam War. Ed returned home to the United States and married Ann Bailey of Concord, N.C.
In 1970, Ed and Ann moved to Chicago where Ed pursued graduate studies at University of Chicago while serving as Director of Student Activities at DePaul University from 1970-1976. In 1976, Ed and Ann moved to Concord, N.C. Ed became President of Ketchie-Houston, Inc. and remained in that role until his retirement. An avid outdoorsman, Ed spent his retirement years fishing and shooting sporting clays. He loved teaching others about his passions and became a certified sporting clays instructor. Until his move to Charlotte, N.C. in 2015, Ed was a longtime member of the Concord Church of Christ.
Ed is preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Ketchie, Sr. and his son, Robert Monroe “Bobby” Ketchie. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Ann Ketchie; daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and Peter May; daughter-in-law and son-in-law, Courtney and Andy Silver; and grandchildren, Olivia May, Samuel Ketchie Silver, Andrew May, and Lillian Ketchie Silver. Ed is also survived by siblings-in-law, nieces, nephews, and their families.
A private memorial service took place on Friday, March 8, 2024 at Sharon Memorial Park in Charlotte, N.C.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
