Doyt William Abernathy, 80, of Jonesville, passed away Tuesday, November 28, 2017 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.
A private family service will be held at a later date.
Born on August 22, 1937, he was the son of the late William and Sally Abernathy.
He was a U.S. Army veteran. During his time in service, he played both football and basketball for the Army.
Attending the Bluegrass Fiddlers Conventions, camping, and playing golf were some of his favorite pastimes.
He was preceded in death by his hero, grandson-in-law, SFC Christopher Barton. Left to cherish his memories are his children, Bart Abernathy (Donna), Beth Godwin (Jeff), and Angie Robinson; grandchildren, Brandon Abernathy (Morgan), Dylan Abernathy, Justin Godwin, Heather Barton, Christa D’Abramo (Chris, Sr.), Carmen Robinson, and Hunter Robinson; great-grandchildren, Baylee, Mia, Stella, and Christopher, Jr.; and sister, Ann.
The family would like to give a special thanks to his sister, Ann for enabling Doyt to enjoy the final years of his life; the doctors and nurses at the VA Hospital in Salisbury, especially Dr. O’Bric, Eunice, and Ted; the nurses at Yadkin Valley Home Healthcare, especially Amy Penley; the employees of Elkin Dialysis; the doctors and nurses at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center ICU 4A unit for all their care; a special thanks to his granddaughter, Heather for taking such good care of him; the caring staff of Wilkinson Funeral Home; and to all the friends he made throughout the years.
