Doris Galata Fogus Owens, 93, passed away March 16, 2017 after a brief stay at the Bob and Carolyn Tucker Hospice House, Kannapolis, NC. Doris had been a long time resident of The Gardens of Taylor Glen in Concord, NC. She was born June 12, 1923 to Otway C. Fogus and Rubena G. Fogus in Charlotte, NC, where she grew up and graduated from Central High School in 1940. She also attended Virginia State Teachers College.
Doris married William “Bill” Owens, Jr. December 24, 1942, and they were married for 71 years until his death in 2014. After Bill returned from service in WWII, Doris and Bill moved to Atlanta, GA, where she was employed by the Southern Bell Telephone Company. She retired from Bell South in Atlanta in 1986. They later moved to Etowah, NC, to enjoy living in the mountains they loved before returning to Charlotte and Concord to live.
Doris is survived by loving daughter, Ellen O. Heikes (Peter) of Charlotte; dearly loved grandson, Jay W. Heikes of Chapel Hill, NC; sister, Jane Fogus Stoker of Davidson; niece, Tish Stoker Signet (John) of Mooresville, NC; three first cousins and their families, Barbara Collins of Atlanta; Claire MacDonald of St. Louis and Nancy Keitt (John) of Highlands, NC.
The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to the entire staff of The Gardens of Taylor Glen for their loving care for many years.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 25, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. in the Dickson Chapel at The Gardens of Taylor Glen, 3700 Taylor Glen Ln., Concord, NC. Visitation with family will follow.
