David Moore Holding of Concord, passed peacefully on September 8, 2022 surrounded by his family.
A celebration of David’s life will be held on October 8, 2022 at 1 pm at Central United Methodist Church with Rev. Tom Lattimore and Rev. Andy Langford officiating. The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall following the service.
David was the youngest son of William Joseph Holding and Margaret Hawkins Holding, born in Charlotte on November 7, 1938.
He attended Fishburne Military Academy in Waynesboro, VA as a youth and made many life-long friends during his time at the Academy, and later serving on the Board of Trustees for more than 15 years. He graduated from Wake Forest University before joining the family business, Holding Brothers, along with his father and two older brothers. He successfully ran and expanded the business over his 40-year career. But David would cite his most important accomplishments were his two sons, John B. and Carter Holding. David supported and was active in several civic organizations in Concord including the Concord Rotary Club, All Saints Episcopal Church, and Central United Methodist Church.
While he proved to be a terrible driver on the ground, David was an excellent pilot, and enjoyed flying for more than 40 years. He and his wife would fly to meet friends across the country for a weekend or a quick trip to the Bahamas. David also enjoyed duck hunting for many years, and as such, his wife Gail became a master of making duck gumbo for the family.
David was a warm and genuine man. He made everyone he met feel comfortable, including every stray cat in his neighborhood. His smile was infectious, and he made friends everywhere he went. He was easy to laugh, tell a good tale and certainly loved to hear one. If you were lucky enough to hear some of David’s world class b.s., you were lucky enough. An ardent devotee of cocktail hour, David made sure he checked out in time to arrive at the Pearly Gates by 5 p.m.
He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Gail Stephens Holding; his two sons, John B. Holding (Leigh Ann), and Carter Holding (Katherine); his two nieces, Lee Holding Dunlap and Margaret Holding; three nephews, Pace Holding, Patman Holding and Langston Holding.
