CONCORD- Dr. David Leonard Collins, Jr. passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving wife and family on Monday, July 3, 2017 after five years of declining health due to complications from renal cancer.
Dr. Collins will be remembered at a private graveside service on Friday.
He was the son of the late David Leonard Collins and Lottie Kibler Collins of Richmond, VA. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years Patricia Anne Benson Collins of Abington, MA.; son Dr. David Collins, III of Austin, TX.; son Dr. John Collins and wife Faith of Salisbury, NC; daughter Deborah Collins Thompson and husband Rev. Chuck Thompson of Apex, NC; son Billy Collins and wife Kimberly of Salisbury, NC; and son James and wife Valerie of Candler, NC. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren: Audrey, Katie MacGilvray and husband Mike, Steven Thompson and wife Kristy, Julie Thompson, Jordan, Jay, Drew, Gavin, Mason, Nick and Matt; and 2 great-grandchildren: Amelia and Elisha. He is also survived by his beloved sister, Mary Frances Myers, and her husband 'Thellis' of Marietta, GA.
Dr. Collins was born in South Boston, VA. on August 22, 1928. He attended elementary and high school in Wilson, North Carolina. He went to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill graduating in 1951 with a B.S. in medicine. He completed his medical school at Harvard University with a M.D. degree in 1954. His internship and residency were both completed at Massachusetts General Hospital. He then served in the United States Air Force as Chief of Surgery at Craig Air Force Base in Selma, Alabama, before joining Dr. George Liles at the Cabarrus Surgical Clinic in Concord, NC from 1961-1993.
His scholastic, professional and personal achievements include: Alpha Epsilon Delta – Premedical Fraternity, Phi Beta Kappa, Sigma Xi Research Society, Phi Chi Medical Fraternity, Mensa, Cabarrus County Medical Society, N.C. Medical Society, National Board of Surgery, Fellow American College of Surgeons, Fellow N.C. Chapter American College of Surgeons, Chief of Surgery, Cabarrus Memorial Hospital, Chief of Staff, Cabarrus Memorial Hospital, publications in 1951 and 1952, Member – Concord Rotary Club, Deacon – First Baptist Church, Concord, NC and Sunday School teacher for Men.
Dr. Collins loved his wife, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, the beach for rest, the mountains for majesty, the continued evolving of medicine and his beloved TAR HEELS!!
