Curtis Everett Mckenzie

February 13, 1924 — February 13, 2016

Curtis was born February 13, 1924 to Fred and Mae McKenzie near Princeton WV. He served in the army during WW2 and fought with distinction in the China, Burma and India Theater. For his service and through the GI Bill he was able to attend his beloved Virginia Tech (VPI at the time) and graduate with a degree in Chemical Engineering. He and Doris were married in 1950 and in 1956 a daughter was born followed by a son in 1959.
Curtis moved his young family south to Fountain Inn SC in 1966 and began a long career in textiles with Fiber Industries (later Celanese) where he led the quality control departments.
Curtis was a long time member of Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) churches in West Virginia, Virginia and South Carolina and in later years a devout Methodist. He held almost every leadership role possible in these churches including elder, administrative board chair, stewardship, building and capital campaign chairs and whatever else was needed. He was a good and humble Christian.
Curtis’ passion was farming. For many years this hobby included Angus cattle and growing almost every type of fruit, nuts and vegetables imaginable. His talent for rose gardening was unsurpassed. He was a loving and loyal husband and the greatest father we could have had – no praise higher can a man earn.
Curtis is survived by his wife of 65 years Doris Ann McKenzie, daughter Christie Dell Hopper and husband Doug of Gaffney and son J.C. McKenzie and wife Pam of Concord. Three grandchildren Heather Jarvis of Atlanta, Matthew McKenzie and wife Crystal and Jason McKenzie and partner Jessica both of Concord and one great grandson Liam McKenzie of Concord.
The family would like to thank all of the employees at The Gardens of Taylor Glen and at NE Medical Hospital who provided (and are still providing) care and comfort.
Per their wishes Curtis will be interred at Cannon Memorial Park Columbarium in Fountain Inn. A family service to celebrate his life will be held at that time. Donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s organization of your choice.
