Clayton Joe Jones M.D. passed away surrounded by his family at his home on August 6, 2017.
A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held 2 PM Friday at Central United Methodist Church with Dr. Andy Langford and Rev. Carol Carkin officiating. The family will receive friends 5 to 7PM Thursday at Wilkinson Funeral Home.
Clayton was born on August 13, 1928 in Memphis, Tennessee. He was raised by his late parents, Clay and Corrine Jones and was also preceded in death by his brother, Luby.
Clayton studied pre-med at Memphis State University and then completed medical school at the University of Tennessee in 1952. Following an internship at John Gaston Hospital in Memphis, he served during the Korean War in Anchorage, Alaska. After the war, Dr. Jones completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Emory University Grady Hospital in Atlanta.
In 1958, Dr. Jones arrived in Concord to join Dr. Lance Monroe to practice OB/GYN. His career spanned over forty-four years and he was responsible for delivering more than ten thousand babies during that time. He also served as Medical Chief of Staff at the hospital.
In 1952, Dr. Jones married Amelia Maxwell, a nursing student from Griffin, GA. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on June 28.
In his free time, he became a community servant spending time as a member or President of the Cabarrus Boys and Girls Club, Rotary Club, Concord High School Booster’s Club, Cancer Society, and Community Free Clinic.
He loved horseback riding, tennis, going to Las Vegas, but most of all, spending time at Lake Tillery.
He is survived by his wife, Amelia; children Tommy Jones and wife, Kathy of Mt. Pleasant, Dr. Mike Jones and wife, Susan of Concord, Laura Lane of Montrose, WV, Tien Tran and wife, Jatam of Concord, Jeff Jones and wife, Brenda of Kernersville, Clayton Jones, Jr. "Chip" and wife, Tricia of Alpharetta, GA; grandchildren, Ashley, Carly, Emily, Scott, Betsy, Jarrett, Kaylee, Maggie, Allie; and great grandchildren, Gibson and Luke.
