Chester Douglas Lyons

Mr. “C.D.” Chester Douglas Lyons, 79, passed away on Monday, January 9, 2017 at CHS-Northeast.
A funeral service will be held 11:00 am, Friday, January 13, 2017 at Wilkinson Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by Rev. Frances Beam and Bill Kinser. Burial will follow at Cabarrus Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 5-7 pm, Thursday night at the funeral home.
CD was born on August 10, 1937 in Franklin Co., VA to the late Joseph Early Lyons and Sylvia Bowles Lyons Wolfe. He is also preceded in death by his step-father, Harry Wolfe; brother, Jim Lyons. CD was a Veteran of the U.S. Air Force.
CD was Assistant Director of Parks and Recreation of Roanoke County VA, from 1970-1979. He helped start the “Community in Schools” program, and was the Seniors Programs Coordinator. He moved to Concord, NC in August of 1979, where he assumed the position of Director of Parks and Recreation of City of Concord until 2002. During his time as Director, he was a basketball referee for Jr. High and High Schools, baseball umpire for youth leagues, High School and a booking agent for AAU. He also was a football coach at Concord Middle and softball umpire for college, as well as umpire for American Legion Post #51. The City of Concord honored him upon his retirement in 2002 by naming the baseball field at Les Myers Park “CD Lyons Field”. CD was a member of the Living Faith Church of the Brethren, where he was on the Board. During his 24 year tenure with the city, CD was involved in many things, such as: Finance Chairman for United Way, helped start the Cabarrus Arts Council, CBA Task Force, Institute of Government, Chair of Region 7 for NC Recreation and Parks Society and remained a member until January 5, 2017, Chairman of Thrift Club Credit Union. He was a member of the American Legion Post #51, where he umpired, and was a Color Man-broadcasting on WEGO. Upon his retirement, he served in the capacity of Board of Managers and Board of Directors for Cannon YMCA until 2015.
He is survived by his wife, Kathy Blizzard Lyons of Concord; son, Dana Douglas Lyons of Boca Raton, FL; sister, Carol Taylor(Ray) of Salem, VA; brothers, Sidney Lyons of Westerville, OH, Bob Lyons of Medina OH, Steven Wolfe of Salem, VA; and a number of other relatives who dearly loved him.
