Carolyn Sandra Nunn, 85, of Concord, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at Atrium Health in Concord on February 18, 2024.
The family will receive friends on Saturday February 24, 2024, from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm at Wilkinson Funeral Home in Concord. A service to celebrate Sandra’s life will be held at 2:00 pm in the Wilkinson Chapel, officiated by the Reverend Casey Aldridge, with a burial service to follow at Carolina Memorial Park.
Sandra was born on June 14, 1938, in Danville, VA, to Nora Lee Mason and Willis Lester Stephenson, a pharmacist. After her father’s death, Sandra and her mother moved to Kannapolis, NC where she graduated from A.L. Brown High School. Her mother briefly ran the Boulevard Lunch restaurant in Kannapolis, and it was there that she met the love of her life, Bill Nunn. Sandra and Bill began a beautiful 66 year marriage and together they raised their two daughters, Carie and Susan.
Sandra worked as an executive secretary in the Montgomery Ward regional office in Kannapolis, and then in Yarn Sales at the Cannon Mills main office. After the closing of Cannon Mills, Sandra began a long career at Cabarrus Memorial Hospital (later Atrium Health) in human resources as the Benefits Coordinator. She was appreciated by many employees for her expertise in handling benefits and planning employee appreciation events. Upon retirement, Sandra capitalized on her knowledge of antiques by opening the Antique Market on Union Street in downtown Concord. Later, she relocated her business to The Depot at Gibson Mill.
With her sense of style and beauty, it was no surprise that Sandra was pulled from the large group of extras during the filming of The Hunger Games 2012 movie and cast to accompany President Snow in his presidential box. She enjoyed the whole experience and being recognized as a movie star.
Most of all, Sandra and her husband Bill enjoyed supporting young people. At Cannon Mills, they volunteered as Explorer Scout leaders and accompanied them on many trips. Affectionately known as ‘Mamaw’ by her four grandchildren, she delighted in their accomplishments. Precious moments she experienced included attending swim, volleyball and cross country meets; dance recitals; and Keystone Club special events as well as attending their college and graduate school graduations. A recent joy has been the birth of her first great grandchild.
Sandra is survived by her husband, Bill Nunn; daughter, Carie Irving (husband Fred); daughter, Susan Pless (husband Craig); grandchildren, Fred Irving, Hanna Pless Smith (husband Corey), Scott Pless, Ellie Irving; and great grandson, Tygo Smith.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Boys & Girls Club of Cabarrus County at the following address: P.O. Box 1405, Concord, NC 28026 or through their website at www.bgclubcab.org.
