Betsy was born Betsy Diane Laughlin on April 25, 1931, to Gene and Doris Hazelwood Laughlin. Her father Gene was killed in an automobile accident in early 1937. Doris, Betsy, her sister Ashlyn, and brother James lives were suddenly transformed from a life of relative prosperity to one of near poverty. Throughout her life she persevered with the motto "It will not always be this way."
Betsy attended Concord public schools through the 11th grade. Due to family circumstances, she was forced to move to Danville, VA her senior year. She attended and graduated from George Washington High School in 1949. She met and started dating Charles C. Sloop Jr. after World War Two and they were married on December 26, 1950. She was the seasoning to my dad's meat and potatoes, and they formed a wonderful dish, remaining married until my father's death in November 2011.
She was proceeded in death by her mother and father, husband Charlies C Sloop Jr, sister-in-law Helen Sloop Quinn, sister Ashlyn Barrier, and brother James Laughlin. She is survived by son Charles C. Sloop III (Celeste), and daughter Rebecca Sloop Miller and was blessed by four grandchildren, Ashlyn O'Neil Miller, Mitchell Colin Miller, Grace Celeste Sloop, and Charlie C. Sloop IV.
Betsy was employed by the Concord Telephone Company for over 35 years, serving as cashier, service representative, and finally assistant to the procuring manager for the telephone company. She retired in 1996. She got her job by boldly walking into L.D. Coltrane Jr's office and announcing "I want a job here!"
She loved animals, particularly horses, participating in horse shows and fox hunting. Her daughter Rebecca inherited that love of horses. It was not unusual for her to pack up two horses, two or three young girls and drive all day to horse shows across the state. She had amazing energy and grit and loved it all. She was an avid reader and loved films and music. Her son Chip acquired her love of films. Betsy was a Christian and attended church all her life until her mental health began to decline. She always sang in the choir and taught Sunday School classes for you teenagers. She saw that her children were raised with Christian values.
Betsy loving and faithfully cared for her husband the last six years of his life after his physical and mental health declined. She kept him active and engaged with life as much as possible. Later her sister-in-law followed the same path of mental decline and Betsy cared for her.
Betsy is a beautiful woman, mother, and wife. We will miss her greatly, but she now has been freed from this earth and has a place in heaven where all will be revealed.
