Bernard John (BJ) McCormick, a husband, father, and entrepreneur, peacefully passed away at his home at the age of 83, on August 13, 2023. He was born and raised in Waterbury, Connecticut and after marrying his wife Pauline, moved to Saranac Lake, New York, to raise their family. They had five children, eight grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
As masons, BJ and his father left their mark in the Adirondacks by applying their craft to a multitude of regional landmarks. In the mid-1980s, the family relocated to Concord, North Carolina, and BJ, Pauline, and their sons continued their legacy of craftsmanship, starting the BJ McCormick and Sons construction business.
After retiring, BJ and Pauline found happiness cruising to destinations around the world, often accompanied by their grandchildren. They enjoyed planning and taking road trip vacations, hosting family and friends at their beach house, and meeting friends for dinner after mass. BJ and Pauline were married 60 years before her death in 2017. In the years after her passing, BJ stayed active and outgoing, making new friendships and enhancing his dancing skills.
BJ is predeceased by his wife Pauline, parents Bill and Madelyn McCormick and sister Mary Kingsbury.
He is survived by brother Bill McCormick, sister Marcy O’Neil, and children Susan Massey (David), Mark McCormick, Dan McCormick, Karen Benton (Tommy), and Amy Reynolds (Jeff). Grandchildren include Jonathan Swinyer, Amber Kelly, William Sutton, Emily Wolowski, Rebecca Petrosky, Alana Reynolds, Joseph Reynolds, and Marie Reynolds.
BJ will be remembered by his family and friends as being strong-willed, independent, and capable, and lived a long life filled with accomplishments and adventures.
A funeral mass will be held at 1:00 pm on Thursday, August 17, 2023 at St. James Catholic Church, officiated by Father Glenn Parker, with burial to follow at the St. James Catholic Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:00-1:00 pm prior to the service at church
