Alexander Martin Patterson passed away Sunday, May 8th,2022, at St. Andrews Assisted Living Center.
He was born March 5th, 1927, to Smith Kay and Mary Margaret Barrier Patterson in Concord, NC. He was the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. John Kay Patterson of Concord, NC and Mr. and Mrs. George Luther Barrier of Mt. Pleasant, NC. He was the first of four children; the others being Mary Kay, James (Jim) and Betsy.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jane Carol Stratton of Hickory, NC. They were married for 61 years.
He is survived by his son, Alexander Martin Patterson, Jr. (Laura) of Concord, NC, daughter, Helen Camille Patrick (Robert) of Conover, NC; grandson, John Alexander Patterson of Concord, NC; sister, Betsy Patterson Nelson (Douglas) of San Antonio, TX; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Alex was a graduate of Concord High School, played in the band, and on the football team. He was the Bugler of the local Company of the NC State Guard at the age of 16 and entered the U.S. Army in 1945. After his military service, he attended Lenoir Rhyne College and played in the Lenoir Rhyne band. He was the third owner of the family insurance business, John Kay Patterson and Company, which later merged with United Cabarrus Insurance Company. He was a member of the Concord Jaycees and was honored with a Life Membership.
He was a lifelong member of his church, Saint James Lutheran, and served as a member and past president of the Church Council. He was also the Scoutmaster for 20 years. During his scouting years, he earned the rank of Eagle Scout, the Scoutmaster's Key, and was awarded the Silver Beaver. He served on several boards for the Concord District and the Central NC Council Boy Scouts of America.
He served as a member and past president of Historic Cabarrus Association, Inc. He was a former chairman of the City of Concord Recreation Commission and served on its Historic District Commission. He was awarded Outstanding Historian of the Year by Historic Cabarrus in 2014. In addition, Alex served as the National Weather Service's Cooperative Observer for Cabarrus County for 10 years.
Alex had a number of leisure interests including rock and mineral collecting, local history, fishing, hunting, gardening, and writing short stories of his life, which he wrote over 400 for the enjoyment of family and friends.
His Memorial Service will be held at Saint James Lutheran Church in Concord, NC at 2:00 pm on Thursday, May 12, 2022 with a reception to follow. The service can also be viewed on YouTube at
