Obituary

Motorsports artist and designer Samuel Mark “Sam” Bass, 57, died on the morning of Saturday, Feb. 16, 2019, after a long illness.

Sam’s love of stock car racing was born when the six-year-old met NASCAR legend Bobby Allison at Virginia’s Southside Speedway and joined the popular driver’s fan club. From that moment, the Hopewell, Va., second-grader dreamed of combining his love of stock car racing with his natural talent for illustration.

Sam is survived by his wife Denise W. Bass; daughter Kendyl Madison Bass; son Samuel Mark Bass Jr.; mother Peggy A. Bass of Concord, N.C.; father David H. Bass of Colonial Heights, Va.; and brother Richard A. Bass. In addition to numerous relatives and close personal friends, Sam had many fans worldwide. Sam was also an accomplished and passionate musician.

A service to celebrate his life will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, February 21 at Rocky Ridge United Methodist Church in Concord. The family will greet friends following the service in the fellowship hall until 1:30 pm. A private burial will be held for the family

The family has asked that—in lieu of flowers—donations be made to Rocky Ridge United Methodist Church, 1428 Old Charlotte Rd. SW, Concord, NC 28027; Motor Racing Outreach (MRO), 5555 Concord Pkwy. S., Ste. 405, Concord, NC 28027; and the Flood Sisters Kidney Foundation, P.O. Box 394, Chappaqua, NY 10514.

It is with heavy hearts that we have lost Sam @ such an early age. I met Sam bass with my son Matthew in Winston Salem for the Wayne T. Robertson Preview in 1999 when viewing all the NEW Winston Cup Series Race Car Paint Schemes. He was a real gentleman and always had that original Sam Bass smile. I have several autographed paint schemes for race cars including Jeff gordon's 2000 #24 Paint Scheme with the flames on it. Plus Sam signed a picture of him in 2000 one of the last years they had the Preview @ the Lawrence Joel Veterans Coliseum in Winston Salem NC. He was a remarkable person and artist. He never forgot a face even if it had been a year or 2 since he saw you. Sam will be greatly missed but his legacy will never be forgotten.

P.S. My family will pray for Sam and the entire Bass Family and the NASCAR Family as well.I worked Fire/Rescue & EMS @ both Rockingham NC North Carolina Motor Speedway & Darlington SC for 14 years had many conversations with Sam.

May God Bless

We are so fortunate to have known Sam. He was such a kind, generous, and caring person. He possessed the most genuine smile which is how he always greeted us. Whenever we stopped by his studio he always took time to chat with us or show us around. Each piece of art was evidence of his incredible talent and the love that he had for his work. Denise, Kendyl, and Mark are the true testimony for what a wonderful and loving husband and father Sam was. For all who knew Sam or called him friend, we are the testimony for what a wonderful and kind-hearted person he was. Sam will be greatly missed by all who were blessed by knowing him. Our hearts ache with sadness as we pray for the Lord to comfort Denise, Kendyl, Mark, and the rest of his family. May God bless you all.

Photo Album

Here is my favorite photo of Sam, which I took in October 2005. At the time I put this piece together, Sam was very proud of his two striped Mustangs, a 2005 GT and a 1972 notchback. He was an amazing talent, a very generous person, and a great audience for my jokes.
