After working for Johnson Furniture Company in Concord, James started his career in the trucking industry at Cummins Carolinas Charlotte branch, which later became Cummins Atlantic Inc. He held various supervisory and managerial positions during his accomplished career of 46 years. He retired in 1998 as Vice President of Promotions and Advertising.

James and his wife Mary were active and faithful members of Derita Presbyterian Church for over 30 years where James served in many leadership roles including Clerk of the Session and Chairman of the building committee for the new sanctuary built in the early 1990s. After retirement, James and Mary moved to Concord and joined Epworth United Methodist Church, especially enjoying activities with the senior citizens group.
James was a loving husband, father, and friend. He enjoyed family outings, playing golf with friends at The Club at Irish Creek, and was an avid fan of UNC basketball. He was predeceased by his parents; his wife of 64 years, Mary Tucker Redding; and his sister, Iris Redding Kennedy.
